Can you spot the fake?

Not all fakes are new counterfeits! Some fake coins are just as old as the originals. Counterfeiting is as old as money itself. In the ancient world fakes were not common but they were made. These coins are just as collectable as the originals. Then there are modern fakes and replicas. Replicas are produced today from silver, gold, brass, aluminum, copper and brass. These reproductions are intended for use in jewelry and as a affordable substitute the real more costly ancient original coin. Replica coins stir up much talk in the ancient coin community. Some find their way on to auction sites and are sold by unsavory individuals and ignorant collectors alike and are sold as originals. So you can see the dilemma. Fakes on the other hand are deliberate alterations to a coin to make it more valuable. This may be an alteration to the lettering to make the coin appear to be a more valuable coin then it really is. Another trick is to silver or gold plate a copper or brass coin to make it appear to be more valuable. Research and common sense are your best weapon against this type of fraud. If a deal seems too good to be true - it is! Below you will find links to fake coin identification and report pages. Some of these sites sell real coins also. There is also a link to a manufacture that makes replica coins and custom medallions. Did you spot the fake?
